Girls Tennis Season Recap

The girls tennis team at Serra went all out this season, fighting to make it to CIF.  Not only did they make it to the play-offs with an impressive 14-5 record, but they also made it to the semi-finals for the first time since Coach Lorene Dabney started coaching in 2005.  This was an amazing feat that took heart, perseverance, and courage.  The girls started off every match with their spirited hand-clap, getting them pumped up!  They also took turns creating a goal for themselves, individually, which helped keep them focused.

The determination and spirit of this team is special because there were only 13 members, down from 16 in years past.  Each girl had to step up and do her part to ensure each win.  Many of the girls willingly played in both singles and doubles throughout the season, making it easy to create winning line-up.  Every practice was set up to defeat the upcoming teams, with drills, games, laughter, and hard work.  Another special characteristic of this team is that they all like each other.  There were strong friendships built all season long, with every member feeling included and that helped with the mutual respect they had for each other on the court.

Individually, the strong doubles team of Karen Villa & Karina Chamberlain were undefeated in the first round of play during the season.  By season's end, they only had two losses, which took them to Individual CIF, where they pulled through to the third round of play.  Getting this far, earned Karen the honor of being on the ALL-CIF 2nd team for Division II!  Congratulations, Karen! Two of our singles players, Joanna Rodriguez and Cassidy Ferrell won their bid to CIF as well, and who represented Serra High with pride.

One of the unique things Coach Dabney did this year was make all five of her seniors the captains.  Each captain divided the major tasks of the team amongst themselves making it easier to manage.  Those captains/seniors are: Ayako Bright, Rachel Fetterman, Karen Villa, Karissa Santos, and Abbey Stewart.  With the maturity and experience of these ladies, the team was strong.   The rest of the team is: Karina Chamberlain, Joanna Rodriguez, Olivia Gesikowski, Sara Gormican, Megan Hutton, Cassidy Ferrell, Kristine Ly, and Remi Ha.

Behind every great team is a great support system.  Coach Dabney and the team would like to thank the awesome parents who help drive to matches, provide nutritious snacks, and giving moral support.  A very special thank you goes to Mr. & Mrs. Chad Chamberlain for donating brand new uniforms to the entire team.  This brought pride and confidence to the girls as they pushed themselves to improve day after day.  The uniforms look beautiful as they shine with the Serra High School colors and the girls look fantastic in them.  Thank you for such a generous gift!

Thank you to our Tierrasanta community along with the tennis community for always supporting our teams.  It's wonderful to have such a close nit group of people who love our students and are willing to assist them in any way they can.

If you have questions about the Serra Tennis Program, you can contact Coach Dabney at ldabney@sandi.net.

Veteran's Day 11/11/11- No School

Origins of Veteran's Day

"To Honor Veterans of All Wars"

Raymond Weeks of Birmingham, Alabama, organized a Veterans Day parade for that city
on November 11, 1947, to honor all of America's Veterans for their loyal service.  Later, U.S.
Representative Edward H. Rees of Kansas proposed legislation changing the name of Armistice
Day to Veterans Day to honor all who have served in America’s Armed Forces.

In 1954, President Dwight  D. Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11th as Veterans Day and called upon Americans everywhere to rededicate themselves to the cause of peace.

In 1968, Congress moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October.  However, it became apparent that the November 11th date was historically significant to a great many Americans.  As a result, Congress formally returned the observance of Veterans Day to its traditional date in 1978.

Halloween Costume Guidelines

Halloween is next Monday and students and teachers are encouraged to get in the Halloween spirit by dressing for the day.  To make this day a success students must follow the guidelines below.
  • All costumes must be “G” rated.
  • The School dress code policy must be followed.
  • Costumes may only be worn on Monday October 31st.
  • Costumes may not be a disruption to instruction in any way.
  • Costumes may not be derogatory or offensive to any groups or individuals.
  • Costumes may not include any weaponry or representations of weapons, or indicate the use of drugs or alcohol.
  • Masks or any face decoration that makes it difficult to identify the student is not permitted.

The bottom line is, your costume may not be a disruption to instruction in any way.  Even if you have followed all the above rules, a teacher or administrator may still deem your costume a disruption.

This is meant to be fun day and enjoyed by all students.  If a costume fails to comply with any of the above expectations the student will be detained and disciplinary action may result. Remember, you will be held accountable for your personal conduct as well.  Our expectation of your behavior is ashigh as it is on any other day.

At lunch the ASB will be hosting a halloween costume contest for staff and students in the Q-Hut!  For a chance to win some prizes and basque in the glory of notoriety, be sure to stop by Q-Hut during lunch on Monday.

Message to Parents From Principal Jimenez

Parents,

As many of you know we have been experiencing extraordinary times with economic issues and crisis throughout the state and country.  I want to thank all the parents for their patience and support of our students, staff and school community.  In addition I want to acknowledge all the students and thank them for arriving to school daily with wonderful attitudes and spirits as they pass through these difficult economic times.

Because of lower than expected enrollment at our school site this school year, we will need to reduce our teaching staff by one teacher in order to stay within our budget.  Over the next week we will experience some changes in our master schedule.   The reduction will be made with the intent to cause the least amount of disruption to student’s academic and social environment.  In addition we are trying to keep the stability of the staff and current schedules as much as possible.

Having said this, I need to make clear that this is a major change to our master schedule and everyone will be impacted.  Some will experience more of a major impact while others may experience very minimal impact.  When making such a major change to the master schedule it is very natural for a ripple effect to occur and impact all students and staff.  Please be aware that it is highly likely your child may experience either a major or minor change in his/her schedule.

Finally, across the district we have some school sites that will reduce staff due to lower than expected enrollment (like Serra High School) while other schools will gain staff due to increases in enrollment.  Overall the district is down more than 1700 students.  Teachers who were laid off will be recalled to fill any final vacancies which may result in a change of staff at the site.  At this time I do not have any information about any impact this may have to our staff here at SHS.

On behalf of the district I would like to apologize for any inconvenience and stress your child may experience as a result of this change.  I would also like to add my apologies for any inconvenience to family and parents.  Together we will work through these difficult times for the better of our students.

With Gratitude,

Michael Jimenez
Principal

PSAT Student Guide Information

Registration for this year's PSAT is now closed.

The number of students who signed up to take the PSAT far exceed our most generous estimates.   We ran out of the "Official Student Guide" during Open House.   We will be working with The College Board to get the Guides as soon as possible.  The copy of the Guide that was on the College Board website is no longer there.

Here are some links that will give you most of the information that was in the Guide.

Emergency Procedures For Parents

Do you know what to do if an school emergency or natural disaster happens while your child is in school? Where do you go?  Where can you park?  How can you be reunited with your child?  If you unable to come to the school, who is allowed to pick up your student?

We have now posted an Emergency Procedures for Parents page on our website to answer these questions.  You can also read it below.  Please take a few moments to read it so you are ready if an emergency happens.
________________________________________________________________________

In case of a school emergency or a natural disaster, such as an earthquake, you need to be aware of our school’s plan for releasing your child.  First and foremost, remain calm.  Remember, it is our primary concern that students remain safe at all times, and that there is an orderly dismissal and release of our students. If you are off campus and learn your child’s school is in a lockdown situation, please do not attempt to enter the campus yourself. It is critical that you follow the instructions of law enforcement, as they will maintain control of the school’s perimeter for everyone’s protection.

Once an all-clear is given, and if there is a need to release students for the day, please know that school staff members will remain on duty until all student’s  have been safely checked out by a parent, guardian, or release contact as designated on your student’s  school emergency card. We will issue notification for student release by our voice messaging system with an automatic call at your designated number. If all parents/guardians arrive at our school at approximately the same time to pick up students, everyone’s understanding, cooperation and patience are essential to our plan.

Your walking to school to pick up your child would be best.  Parking will be very limited.  If you must drive, be prepared to park at least three blocks from the school.  Do not plan to park in school parking areas as it may interfere with getting emergency fire, medical and/or police vehicles into school. Proceed immediately to our Student Reunification Area on the South side of the administration building.

For the safety of every child, we must document to whom each child is released. When you arrive at school, proceed to the Student Reunification Area, and plan to do the following:

  1.  Fill out Student Reunification Form
  2. Be prepared to present a picture identification card. No exceptions a picture ID must be presented.
  3. Information will be verified and the form will be returned to you. You will be directed to the reunion gate.
  4. Proceed to the reunion gate (South side of the 600 bungalows) Hand form to school personnel
  5. As soon as possible your student will be brought to the reunion gate. Your student will be asked to verify their identity with a school ID.
  6. Once your student(s) are released to you will need to leave immediately.

It will take some time for the orderly dismissal of all our students, so please be patient and be prepared to wait.  The less confusion, the quicker students will be reunited with parents/guardians.

REMINDER:   Your child will be released only to those listed on the Emergency Card.  It is therefore imperative that you keep information on your child’s Emergency Card up to date.  Know also that for any reason your child is not picked up, he/she will be placed in an alternate place of safety.

These procedures should be shared with everyone you list on the Emergency Card so they are familiar with our plan and these concerns.

Detection Canine Presentation @ Open House

Dear Serra High School Parents,

Serra High School is committed to providing a safe and drug free learning environment for each and every one of our students and staff. To that end, Serra High School Administration is renewing their  contract with Interquest Detection Canines Inc., to provide trained detection canines to conduct random, unannounced inspections on campus.

These canines are trained to detect the presence of illicit drugs, alcohol, and gunpowder-based items. During the random, unannounced visits, campus buildings, parking lots, and grounds will be randomly inspected for prohibited items. If detected and found, the school will initiate the appropriate disciplinary action.

These canines are non-aggressive retrieving breeds such as Golden and Labrador Retrievers. They are trained to discriminate specific “scents” of contraband items and indicate the area where the scent is  detected. Interquest provides service to over 1,200 public school districts across the nation.

To provide you with clear and accurate information about this service, we are hosting a Parent Info meeting before the opening of Fall Open House on Wednesday, September 21 st, 2011. This meeting will take place from 5:30pm-6pm in the Theater. The Canine Detective Unit will be present to provide an actual detection demonstration, and answer questions. Please plan to join us on Wednesday to become acquainted with this new service. We hope to see you at Open House.

Respectfully,

Michael Jimenez

Around 12:35 p.m. today, just as fifth period was starting, Serra High lost all power.    In accordance with our emergency procedures, all classrooms were evacuated to the upper field.  During the evacuation, it was determined that it was an area-wide power outage and the campus was safe.   The power came back on at 1:00 p.m. and staff and students were allowed to re-enter the buildings.  However, a couple of minutes later the power went out again.  If the classroom had adequate lighting, student were allowed to return to their classroom to get out of the heat.  Other classes were moved to the Media Center.     Students remained with their fifth period teachers until the power returned around 1:30.

We are very proud of our students and staff for their outstanding performance during this emergency situation.

Why Join?  TO HELP OUR SERRA STUDENTS SUCCEED!
ü  BETTER TEST SCORES – The Serra P.T.O. supplied snacks to ALL students during testing days last year, which resulted in students taking the testing seriously, which resulted in higher test scores for Serra.  Higher test scores will positively influence Serra High in many ways.  Students will realize that they can achieve if they really try.  Higher test scores also will attract future students, who might have chosen to go elsewhere for high school.
ü  RETAIN TOP PERFORMING TEACHERS/STAFF – Another vital way the P.T.O. helps Serra High is through Teachers/Staff appreciation functions.  We want the best Teachers/Staff to stay/come to Serra to benefit our students.  When the Teachers/Staff feel appreciated, they enjoy being at Serra.  They will tell their friends who are Teachers/Staff how wonderful it is to teach at Serra High.  The P.T.O. also provides hospitality to students, families and the community.
ü  The P.T.O. provides for campus beautification, classroom support and scholarships for graduating seniors.

Becoming a member of the Serra P.T.O. allows you to become as involved with your student’s high school as you desire.  You can become a board member and attend the monthly meetings, or if you do not want to commit any time for meetings, you can become a member and show your support by paying only the membership dues.
