Prevent Meningococcal Disease
Prevent Meningococcal Disease and Detect It Early
Since January of this year, there have been an unusually large number of cases of meningococcal disease (caused by the “meningococcus” bacteria) in Tijuana, Mexico. Most cases have been in children and young adults. Meningococcal disease can result in death if not detected and treated early.
Here is what you can do to prevent meningococcal disease and to detect it early:
1. Know the symptoms: fever, intense headache, lethargy, stiff neck, and/or a pinpoint rash that does not blanch under pressure.
2. Contact your doctor when these symptoms are present.
3. Get the meningococcal vaccine. The vaccine (known to doctors as MCV4) is recommended for all children between the ages of 11 and 18 years. The first dose should be given at age 11 or 12 years. A booster dose can be given at age 16 years. The vaccine is recommended for some adults: those who travel to certain areas where there are very
high rates of meningococcal disease (mainly Sub-Saharan Africa), military recruits, college-age students living in dormitories, and adults with certain health conditions.
4. Use good hygiene. Frequent hand washing is important. Bacteria can be spread through coughing and sneezing. When a tissue is not available, cough or sneeze into your own elbow or sleeve (NOT into your hand).
5. Saliva can spread the infection. Do not share food or beverages. Do not share water bottles, eating utensils, lipstick or lip balm. Adults must not share cigarettes or pipes.
6. Travelers. If you are traveling to Tijuana, be aware of the recent reports of meningococcal disease. Promptly seek care for suggestive symptoms.
For reliable information on meningococcal disease, go to the following website: www.cdc.gov/meningococcal/

Valentine's Day Guidelines
Here are just a few guidelines for your student to follow as they prepare for Valentine's Day.
Please share with your student.
As always, our dress code will be enforced.
Parents: Please do not have anything (flowers, stuffed animals, balloons, candy) delivered to the school. We will not deliver them to students, nor will students be allowed to leave class to pick them up. Please arrange to have all gifts delivered off campus.
Please share with your student.
- Latex balloons are never allowed on campus. Do not bring them. The balloons can be deadly to students and staff with latex allergies. Due to the nature of these allergies, we cannot keep the balloons in the office. Any latex balloons brought on campus will be disposed of and not returned.
- Gifts must not be large enough to cause a disruption in class. This includes large Mylar balloon bouquets.
- Baked goods (cakes, cupcakes, cookies, etc) will not be allowed on campus. The crumbs left behind by these items attract various types of unwanted pests.

Behavior Expectations For Athletic Competitions
To Serra High School Families,
Tonight we have an exciting basketball game against Patrick Henry High School at Patrick Henry High School’s gymnasium. I wanted to share my concern for student safety, because some of the activity after our last game against Patrick Henry did not represent either school in a positive fashion. Please talk to your student about sportsmanship and your expectations in terms of their actions both during and after the game. It has been brought to our attention by a number of students that students from both schools have been exchanging negative and inappropriate messages via electronic communications (Internet, Facebook, and Twitter). The messages contain verbal slurs as well as threatening remarks and plans to meet after the game for a possible physical confrontation.
Both principals have been working closely together and have agreed to remove any spectator(s) from the game for any inappropriate and/or unsportsmanlike conduct. Removal from the game may result in a suspension if deemed necessary by the principal(s) of the school. In addition school police has been contacted about the electronic messages and possible meeting post competition. SDUSD Police will also be contacting SDPD for assistance if needed.
The girl’s game is at 6:00 p.m. and the boy’s game begins at 7:30 p.m. and the games will likely be a sellout based on our pre-ticket sales. Once the Serra or Henry side is filled, Henry High School will close the ticket sales as we don't want students sitting on the opponent’s sides. If we have to turn away anyone at the door, Henry will fully refund any un-used tickets that were sold earlier.
It is my hope that we have a competitive game with spirited fans that are there to watch and enjoy the sport. Please help me support this mission by outlining clear expectations for your student and reminding them to honor the sportsmanship policy of CIF and the schools and the under-age curfew laws by going directly home after the game.
Go Conquistadors!
Sincerely,
Michael Jimenez
Principal SHS
